The Spirit of Competition:

This year we had the opportunity to swing by the 2011 CrossFit Games Regional event right downtown at Navy Pier.  In year’s past the regional was typically held in Colorado for the states in the midwest region, so we were very fortunate to have such an event so close by!  In watching CrossFit grow, both in it’s awareness for those who haven’t heard of it before, and in the size of the Games from year to year, there is something that has remained constant with all of the growth.  The community of people both competing and watching from the sidelines.

Our community is one of many nucleus’ in a much larger community.  These Nuclei converge on these much larger organized events and form an atmosphere and energy that you have to be there to experience.  The high-fives, the cheering, and the camaraderie is all there amongst the athletes and the spectators, just like any training day at our nucleus.  The crowd is eager to meet and greet each other with open arms, and congratulate the competitors from competing gyms.  When an athlete is struggling on a movement or repitition on a workout, everyone in the crowd cheers them on in hopes of them being successful in that event.

Since we all know what that feels like when we hit a workout on a bad night’s sleep, scale up into something we’re unsure that we can do, or are on the verge of finishing last, the ability to relate to these amazing men and women putting it all out there in hopes of being able to move on to compete for the title of the “world’s fittest” man or woman, is very realistic and very personal.  We know, or at least have a really good idea, of how they’re feeling when we see them slowing down from the onset of fatigue.  We try and fathom how we can work that hard, and still come out the other end in one piece (and repeat it 5 more times over the course of a weekend).  We know the “butterflies in the stomach” feeling that feels sometimes overwhelming just before the clock starts, and know it’s probably even more intense for these athletes.

Regardless of winning and losing, there is something very human about the CrossFit Games, a workout at our gym, and being amongst those participating.  It’s why we keep coming back for more, meeting more great people to train with, and what we build our friendships on.  Competition, but in it’s most purest and simplistic form.  It has led to the acheivements that each one of you has accomplished, regardless of where your goals started, and where they’re at now.  It has been the glue that holds the CrossFit Community together, and will continue to draw in those that are not afraid of exploring what they’re capable of, no matter where they start.  We’ve established that even if you don’t think you’re competitive, you will find your niche in the workouts/movements that you thrive in, and always want to improve amongst those around you.  At the end of the day, you know you’re amongst friends who want you to succeed just as much as you do.
